In an article titled “How Poland Became the New ‘Center of Gravity’ in Europe”, Washington Post columnist Ishan Tharoor wrote on Friday that “the war in Ukraine has led to geopolitical shifts in Europe, shifting NATO’s center of gravity eastward … beyond its traditional pillars in France and Germany, to countries like Poland, its Baltic neighbors, and other countries once behind the Iron Curtain.”
Commenting on this week’s visit to Poland by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the daily stressed “the words of gratitude for Warsaw’s role in supporting Kyiv expressed by Zelensky”, adding that “over the past year, Poland has emerged as a key bulwark in the West’s confrontation with Russia”.
The Washington Post columnist notes “the strengthening of defense investment, the supply of Leopards and MiGs to Ukraine, and the establishment of a permanent US military garrison in Poland”.
He added that Polish leaders “are trying to use Poland’s new position and the sense of “moral superiority” due to the war in Ukraine to criticize the European Union and its proceedings regarding the dispute over the rule of law”.
