During the visit, Rau will hold political consultations with his Japanese counterpart Yoshimasa Hayashi to discuss "current and prospective cooperation," the Polish foreign ministry said in statement.

The two top diplomats will also "touch upon issues on today’s international agenda, including with regard to either country’s immediate neighbourhood," according to the statement.

"In particular, they will reflect on the situation in Ukraine and the mounting challenges to international security in East Asia," the statement added.

While in Japan from Tuesday to Friday, Rau will make a trip to Hiroshima to meet with municipal authorities and tour the Peace Memorial Museum, the Polish foreign ministry said.

It added that Rau's visit to Japan aimed to "emphasise the special importance of Poland–Japan relations, which were elevated to the rank of strategic partnership in 2015."
