During the gathering in the Czech capital, the prime ministers of Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary were expected to discuss the situation in Ukraine and regional security, officials told reporters.

The Czech government said ahead of the talks that energy and migration were also among the key topics to be discussed.

Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Hungary together form the four-nation Visegrad Group (V4), a regional cooperation platform they started in 1991.

Ahead of his visit to Prague, the Polish prime minister said: "I'm going to Prague on Tuesday to check whether the Visegrad Group is a format that can effectively support EU activities."

He added: "It's somewhat of a paradox that such ambiguous signals about Russia and Putin are coming from Budapest and Bratislava. I see no reason why Hungary and Slovakia cannot, as before, stand in solidarity ... to support those fighting a regime that does not respect our values."

While in Prague on Tuesday, Tusk was also scheduled to hold bilateral talks with his Czech counterpart Petr Fiala and President Petr Pavel, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
