Voters will elect nearly 47,000 aldermen and more than 2,500 mayors and other local government officials nationwide.

A second round of voting, if needed, will be held on April 21.

Run-offs between the two most popular mayoral contenders will take place where the winning candidate fails to garner more than 50 percent of the vote in the first round.

More than 29 million Poles are entitled to cast their ballot in the local government elections, state news agency PAP reported.

Polling stations will open at 7 a.m. on Sunday and close at 9 p.m.

A media blackout comes into force on Friday at midnight under which domestic news providers are forbidden by law from publishing opinion polls showing the level of support for candidates in the elections.

The ban lasts until polling stations close. Political campaigning is also forbidden during this period.
