Szymon Hołownia, Speaker of the Sejm, Poland's lower house of parliament, has demanded an explanation from the parliamentary leader of the right-wing opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, Mariusz Błaszczak, after a late-night fight allegedly broke out between PiS MP Dariusz Matecki and actor Jacek Kopczyński.

According to a preliminary report from parliamentary security officials, the confrontation also involved other PiS MPs and their guests. Hołownia described the behaviour as “completely unacceptable.”

Conflicting accounts

Police said Kopczyński, who admitted consuming alcohol, was charged with assaulting two lawmakers before being released.

Matecki claims the actor approached him without being provoked and struck him and another MP. Kopczyński denies any assault, describing the event as a verbal dispute that escalated into a group scuffle.

The actor, who recently underwent heart surgery, was later taken to hospital. His lawyer maintains his innocence and says evidence will clear his name. Hołownia has pledged to review CCTV footage and consult security officials.

Matecki has accused the Speaker of lying and says he will file a complaint with the parliamentary ethics committee.
