"I will attend an election campaign event in Poland to support the democratic candidate there" - Nicusor Dan declared, quoted by Romania's Digi24 portal, and adding that he had received an invitation from Polish political partners.

His recent rival in the Romanian elections, the far-right oriented and Moscow-aligned George Simion, recently supported Poland's conservative Karol Nawrocki presidential bid.

There are many parallels between the 2025 presidential elections in Romania and Poland. Here and there, a well-educated, liberal and pro-European mayor of the country's capital found himself facing a right-wing candidate with a checkered past that includes extreme forms of football hooliganism.

In Romania, on May 18, in the second round of the presidential elections, Nicusor Dan defeated George Simion.

In Poland the runoff vote between Rafał Trzaskowski and Karol Nawrocki is scheduled for June 1, 2025.
