The final two permits were issued in Łódź province this week, following similar approvals in the Mazovia region in April, according to the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA).

A tender to pick contractors for the 92 km expansion project will be launched in late June, with contracts due to be signed by mid-2026, the agency said on Friday.

The scheme will add a third lane in each direction on the 89-km stretch from the Łódź Północ interchange to Pruszków and a fourth lane on the final 3 km to the Konotopa junction, the western entrance to Warsaw.

Builders will also resurface carriageways where the A2 crosses the north-south A1 motorway at Łódź Północ.

Traffic counts show the 13-year-old route now carries 50,000 to 100,000 vehicles a day, making it one of Poland’s most congested corridors.

Officials say the additional capacity is essential ahead of the planned Central Transport Hub (CPK) project aiming to build a new mega-airport and rail hub west of Warsaw.

Construction will be carried out under traffic, with two lanes kept open in each direction throughout, GDDKiA said, calling the project one of the most complex motorway upgrades in the country in recent years.
