Nawrocki, 42, a Eurosceptic historian, captured 50.89 percent of the vote in Sunday’s run-off, according to the National Electoral Commission. Centrist Warsaw mayor Rafał Trzaskowski received 49.11 percent, leaving a margin of fewer than 370,000 ballots in the nation of 37 million.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also offered congratulations, saying in a statement that “the Polish people have spoken and support a stronger military and securing their borders.”
Calling Poland “a model Ally and a key contributor to strengthening the NATO Alliance,” Rubio added that Washington looked forward to “working closely with President-elect Nawrocki and Poland’s government to further our shared priorities.”
Nawrocki is due to take the oath of office on Aug. 6, succeeding two-term conservative incumbent Andrzej Duda, who was barred from running again by term limits.
