Storms, rain hit parts of Poland

Firefighters were called out almost 5,600 times after strong winds and heavy rainfall hit parts of Poland at the start of this week, a spokesman for firefighters said on Tuesday.

High winds and thunderstorms lashed the country’s southern and western provinces as well as the north-central region of Kujawsko-Pomorskie, Karol Kierzkowski, a spokesman for the State Fire Service, told reporters.

Hundreds of firefighters were deployed to help pump water out of flooded basements and remove fallen trees from roads and railroad tracksKierzkowski said.

The Government Centre for Security (RCB) sent out millions of text messages on Monday alerting people in various provinces over intense rainfall and possible storms causing a risk of local flooding and power outages.

There were no reports of serious injuries in the aftermath of the extreme weather.
