Reinforcements have been sent to high-risk regions and severe weather alerts issued for 10 provinces.

Government spokesman Adam Szłapka confirmed the situation will be reviewed at an upcoming ministers’ briefing, with fire services already strengthened in some areas. The military is also on standby.

Polish armed forces on high readiness over heavy rain, flash flood risks

Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced on social media that, in response to the heavy rains sweeping southern Poland, he had ordered the Armed Forces Operational Command to gather necessary equipment and form a Military Task Group in Nisko, a town in the southeast near Rzeszów.

“Our military units are fully prepared to provide assistance,” he stressed.

According to Kosiniak-Kamysz, the Territorial Defence Forces have been placed on high alert in four provinces in the southern and eastern parts of the country: Małopolskie, Podkarpackie, Świętokrzyskie, and Lubelskie.

Severe rain warnings across eastern and central Poland

Poland’s Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) has issued severe rain alerts for several regions, warning of heavy downpours linked to a Genoa low-pressure system.

Moderate (level II) rainfall is expected in parts of the Lubelskie and Podlaskie provinces in eastern Poland, while more intense (level III) rain warnings cover areas including Mazowieckie province, which contains the capital Warsaw, in central Poland, and Świętokrzyskie province in south-central Poland.

Alerts are in effect from Tuesday evening until Thursday evening.
