The decision follows a unanimous vote by the National Road Safety Council to introduce the legal requirement. According to Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak, the measure aims to improve the safety of children and teenagers and responds to demands from parents.

“Our task is to introduce this provision into the Road Traffic Act,” Klimczak said on Monday.

“With this resolution in hand, which establishes the legal obligation to wear protective helmets for children under 16, we now have the basis for a legislative change,” he added.

The new regulations could come into force in the autumn. For now, it is unclear what penalties will apply for failing to comply.

The ministry also plans a public awareness campaign to promote helmet use.
