Before taking office as Minister of Energy, he served as Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Climate and Environment and was spokesperson for PSL, a political party partly focused on farmers and rural communities in Poland.

The newly established Ministry of Energy will tackle some of Poland’s most strategic challenges, including nuclear power and small modular reactors (SMRs). Because of its broad and critical responsibilities, Motyka has quickly been dubbed a ‘superminister,’ and his ministry nicknamed the ‘superministry.’

The politician will oversee areas previously managed partly by the Ministry of Climate and Environment and the Ministry of Industry - the latter based in Katowice, southern Poland - which is now being phased out.

Small-town beginnings and a viral campaign: Motyka’s rise in Polish politics

Born on 30 September 1992, Miłosz Motyka hails from the small southern town of Myślenice, with a population of just 17,000. He became involved in youth political movements linked to the PSL’s Young Forum while studying at the Hugo Kołłątaj University of Agriculture in Kraków and attended Poland’s School for Political Leaders.

His political career gained momentum in 2018 when he launched a campaign exposing how much politicians from the former ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party had enriched themselves through positions in state-owned companies.

The campaign, based on meticulous checks of asset declarations, went viral under the hashtag #SamiSwoi - a nod to the beloved 1967 Polish comedy Sami Swoi (Our Folks), directed by Sylwester Chęciński.

As PSL spokesperson, Motyka became known for his detailed critiques of PiS politicians. Later, as Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Climate and Environment, he was responsible for renewable energy and the power sector.

What will the new ‘superminister’ focus on? Motyka outlines priorities

Among his top priorities as energy minister, Motyka lists extending electricity price freezes through the fourth quarter of 2025, as set out in the law on low energy prices. This also includes accelerating processes related to renewable energy, as detailed in amendments to Poland’s so-called “wind turbine law.”

Speaking on TVN24, Motyka emphasised the importance of unlocking the full potential of all renewable energy sources and ensuring a fair energy transition in Poland. He also pledged to implement an “anti-blackout package” aimed at reducing the risk of power outages.
