Poland rules out dangerous cholera strain in suspected case

A woman hospitalised in north-western Poland with suspected cholera is not infected with a dangerous strain of the disease, a spokesperson for the country’s Chief Sanitary Inspectorate (GIS) told state news agency PAP.

Final test results are expected to be made public on Monday, GIS spokesperson Marek Waszczewski said.

The elderly patient was transferred on Saturday to a regional hospital in Szczecin after cholera bacteria were detected during treatment at a facility in the nearby town of Stargard. Two independent laboratories confirmed the presence of the bacteria, prompting an investigation by public health authorities.

Officials said the woman and her close contacts had not recently travelled abroad, raising concerns about how the infection was contracted. Her condition is reported to be stable.

A total of 26 people who came into contact with the patient were placed in quarantine. Fourteen were released on Wednesday, with the remaining 12 expected to complete isolation by Friday. None have reported symptoms or a decline in health.
