Poland has extended temporary border controls with Lithuania and Germany until 4 October 2025 to help seal off the eastern route of illegal migration shifting through Lithuania and Latvia, Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński confirmed.

The extension was announced by Kierwiński during a Sunday briefing with provincial governors and security service heads.

"On Friday, 1 August, the relevant regulation was issued and submitted for notification to the European Commission," the minister said.

"In September, we will decide on the next steps based on data from the Border Guard, military, and police," he added.

The minister also said that "all our partners have been informed" about the decision.

"There is full understanding from our European partners, because these measures aim to close the migration route that has now re-emerged through Lithuania and Latvia," Kierwiński stressed, confirming that Latvia and Estonia have also been informed.

Kierwiński explained that the reintroduction and extension of temporary border controls at the German and Lithuanian borders respond to the urgent need - shared by Poland and its EU partners - to seal the eastern migration route.

Poland’s border barrier, which is 98% effective, has pushed Belarusian and Russian services and illegal migrants to other parts of the border.

Poland must defend the eastern border. In the west, we have allies, says Kierwiński

On Saturday, 2 August, Poland’s Interior Minister visited the tripoint of the Polish, Belarusian, and Ukrainian borders near the Włodawa in eastern Poland.

During a press conference, he stressed that the main efforts to secure Poland’s borders focus on the eastern frontier, where the real battle against illegal migration is taking place.

Kierwiński highlighted the strategic importance of strong protections along the eastern border, noting that unlike the east, the western border is safeguarded through cooperation with allied nations.

“The Polish state is effectively securing its borders - east, west, and north,” he added in a statement shared on social media.
