Vistula river hits a new historic low of just 10 cm in Warsaw

On Friday to Saturday night, the Warsaw-Bulwary hydrological station on the Vistula river read just 10 cm depth - the lowest level on record, almost halving last year's minimum, and 3 cm below the previous record from July 2025.

Poland's Institute of Meteorology and Water Management confirmed on its website that the new record low of just 10 cm was first recorded on Friday, August 22, at 8:00 PM - and the level remained unchanged in the following hours.

The exact minimum and maximum levels have been measured at the Warszawa-Bulwary measuring station since 1951. The "hydrologically safe" water level there ranges from 150 to 600 cm, while the long-term average level stands at 230 cm.

In this context - 10 cm is an extremely alarming reading.

The previous record low was set in July of this year, when the Vistula River at the Warszawa-Bulwary station dropped to 13 cm, in result of an ongoing hydrological drought. The preceding shallowness records at that point were 20 cm in 2023 and 2024, and before that - 25 centimeters in 2015.

It is hard not to notice that the problem is intensifying, and quite rapidly too. As the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management informed, the issue is not limited to Warsaw - water levels in as many as 16 stations across the country have fallen below the seasonal minimum.
