The overnight attack marked the largest aerial bombardment of Ukraine since the beginning of the war. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russian forces launched a staggering 810 Shahed drones and 13 Iskander missiles during the assault. Ukrainian defense systems managed to shoot down or neutralize 747 of the drones and nine of the missiles.

At least three people were killed in Kyiv, including a mother and her infant child. Around 20 others were injured. Civilian infrastructure suffered significant damage, reigniting concerns over the safety of urban populations during increasingly aggressive air campaigns.

"This brutal attack on Kyiv’s government buildings shows that continued delays and soft responses to Putin are pointless," Prime Minister Tusk stated. He urged the "United States and European nations to compel Russia to agree to an immediate ceasefire."

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko confirmed that the government headquarters in Kyiv sustained damage for the first time since the invasion began. The roof and upper floors caught fire after being struck.

The scale of the attack reflects an alarming escalation. Ukraine’s Armed Forces Command (DORSZ) reported that in just the first week of September, Russia deployed nearly 2,000 drones against Ukraine.
