Poland’s president, Karol Nawrocki, has submitted a bill to the Sejm, the lower house of parliament, that would make it harder and slower for foreigners to obtain citizenship.

The draft law would extend the minimum period of uninterrupted residence required for naturalisation from three years to 10.

The new rule would apply to foreigners holding permanent residence permits, EU long-term residence permits, or permanent right of residence.

The presidential bill follows a promise made last Friday.

Zbigniew Bogucki, head of the presidential office, said two proposals would be sent to the Sejm on Monday, including one on extending the period required to apply for Polish citizenship.
