The attack happened on Sunday, 12 October 2025. Prosecutors have detained the owner of the animals, a 53-year-old former police officer.

The dogs were reportedly used to guard a local shooting range in the village of Racula, close to a motorway service area on the S3 expressway, where the driver had stopped for a routine break.

Investigators believe the dogs escaped from the fenced property before attacking the man, who suffered over 50 bite and tear wounds. He died at hospital three days later.

Experts quoted by Polish media suggest the dogs may have been trained to attack people.

The case is being investigated by prosecutors and specialist services, who are also reviewing the operation of the nearby shooting range.

The dogs’ owner faces a potential prison sentence ranging from five years to life.
