Poland’s parliament approved the funding law on February 20, authorizing the state budget to capitalize the company Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe, which is developing the project. EU approval was required before the financing could proceed.

The plant is planned for the Lubiatowo-Kopalino site on the Baltic coast in the Pomerania region. Construction of the first reactor is scheduled to begin in 2028, with the initial unit expected to be completed in 2035.

Officials say nuclear energy will become a major pillar of Poland’s energy mix and play a critical role in the country’s transition away from fossil fuels.

Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe is set to hold a press conference Wednesday to present recent progress on the project. Unofficial reports suggest the government may formally announce the EU’s approval later in the afternoon.
