Poland should reinstate mandatory military service and begin openly preparing society for potential conflict, the head of the country’s National Security Bureau (BBN), Sławomir Cenckiewicz, said Wednesday.
Cenckiewicz was also asked whether he believes war is imminent. Citing recent remarks by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, he recalled U.S. assessments that Russia could be ready to confront Europe as early as 2027. Yes, I am concerned, Cenckiewicz said.

Speaking on RMF FM radio, Cenckiewicz argued that reactivating conscription—suspended in 2010—is part of a broader strategy to bolster national defense.

“We must start talking about threats directly,” he said, adding that more focus is needed on civilian training and building protective infrastructure, including wartime hospitals.

“All legislation pushing these matters forward will be gladly signed by President Karol Nawrocki,” he noted.

He added that Europe currently lacks sufficient capabilities to defend itself independently and described Russia as being on the offensive, with no interest in peace.
