Poland is regarded in the United States as a model ally that meets its defence commitments and works closely with Washington across political, economic and military areas, Polish deputy foreign minister Robert Kupiecki said on Thursday during a visit to the US capital.

Kupiecki told the Polish Press Agency PAP that his talks focused on Poland’s security and bilateral cooperation, noting that the release of the new US National Security Strategy added weight to the discussions.

He described the strategy as a clear statement of how the US sees its global role, adding that little in it surprised Warsaw due to earlier speeches by senior US officials.

He said some elements have been met with concern in Europe, particularly the strategy’s "ambiguity" toward Europe and European institutions.

He also pointed to the absence of Russia as a defined threat – a notable omission given the war in Ukraine – though he suggested it may relate to ongoing US-mediated talks between Moscow and Kyiv.

Kupiecki said American officials spoke "only positively" about Poland, calling it "in some sense a model state" for what the US hopes to see in Europe.

He highlighted Poland’s expanding defence capabilities and industrial base, which he said are viewed with appreciation in Washington.

Turning to the war in Ukraine, Kupiecki said that while there is "a certain tone of optimism" in Washington – driven in part by President Donald Trump’s expectation of a breakthrough possibly before Christmas – there is also a sense that recent rounds of US–Russia and US–Ukraine talks have produced some progress.

Kupiecki noted that there is some "pressure on President Zelensky to make decisions on the most difficult issues, including territorial concessions."
