Poland’s prime minister said on Friday he was concerned that US threats to take control of Greenland could strain NATO unity, adding that Warsaw, as a loyal ally, has a duty to speak frankly with Washington about its concerns.

Poland views the United States and NATO as central to its security in the face of an increasingly assertive Russia, and officials in Warsaw fear that divisions within the alliance could embolden Moscow, the Reuters news agency reported.

It said a US military seizure of Greenland from fellow NATO member Denmark would send shockwaves through the alliance and deepen rifts between President Donald Trump and European leaders.

"I’m very concerned about the Greenland issue, and I’m also very concerned about what is happening in the United States and the ideological and political tensions that are building within NATO and within the US itself," Tusk told a press conference on Friday.

"But because we are allies and friends—and Poland is an exceptionally loyal ally of the United States—I believe that this loyalty requires honesty. Among friends, you should speak openly about what is right and what is wrong," Tusk said.
