Poland’s government is considering closer cooperation with the Catholic Church to strengthen national resilience, including plans to use parish facilities as shelters and aid distribution points in times of crisis.

The interior ministry says the proposal is part of a broader strategy to make use of both state and community resources in emergencies such as natural disasters.

The idea was discussed during a recent meeting between Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński and Catholic bishops, state news agency PAP reported.

Officials said one of the key elements of the plan is to tap into the country’s extensive network of parishes, which could serve as local hubs for assistance or temporary shelter if needed.

Caritas Polska, the Church’s charitable organisation, is also expected to play a role, drawing on its experience in organising humanitarian aid domestically and abroad.

Fr. Leszek Gęsiak, spokesman for the Polish Bishops' Conference, the central authority of the Catholic Church in Poland, said the Church is ready to continue supporting relief efforts in crisis situations, using its organisational capacity and international contacts.

The interior ministry said that institutional cooperation is only part of a wider preparedness effort. Authorities are also rolling out public education initiatives aimed at helping citizens respond to emergencies.

These include the distribution of a safety guide to households and plans for nationwide civil defence workshops, where participants would learn practical skills such as evacuation procedures, first aid and survival techniques.

Organizers say the workshops will focus on hands-on training, including simulated scenarios designed to better prepare participants for real-life threats.

Officials say the overall goal is to strengthen public resilience and build habits that could help save lives in emergencies.
