Park officials said trees and branches were breaking under the weight of snow, posing a serious risk to people in the mountains.

“Due to trees and branches breaking under the weight of snow, the entire area of the Tatra National Park is closed until further notice,” they said in a statement, urging visitors to stay away.

Officials called on tourists to strictly observe the ban and abandon plans to enter the mountains.

Mountain rescue services warned that avalanche danger in the Tatra Mountains had reached level three on a five-point scale, meaning avalanches can occur naturally and travel conditions are difficult.

Windblown snow has accumulated along ridge lines, creating unstable snow cover, they said.

Following intense snowfall in recent days, deep drifts have formed in higher elevations. The Tatra Volunteer Search and Rescue Service (TOPR) advised against venturing into high-mountain terrain.

Snow depth exceeded 1.6m on the Kasprowy Wierch peak and reached about 1.8m in the Valley of Five Polish Lakes, according to officials.

Earlier on Tuesday, authorities had already closed the paved road to Lake Morskie Oko and a ski route from Hala Goryczkowa to Kuźnice, state news agency PAP reported.

Conditions worsened later in the day, prompting a full closure of the area. Officials again urged the public to comply with the ban and avoid mountain trips.
