Poland’s Last Generation (Ostatnie Pokolenie) movement has announced it is ending its activities, while making clear that its broader resistance will continue in a new form.

“After two years of the loudest climate protests in Poland’s history, Last Generation has fulfilled its mission and is announcing the end of its activities,” the group said in a statement released on Friday.

The organisation became known for high-profile protests in which activists wearing distinctive orange vests, glued themselves to asphalt on major city roads, bringing traffic to a standstill.

It also drew sharp criticism over protests in which art objects or monuments were doused in paint including an incident with the Warsaw Mermaid Statue. Activists involved in the stunt later received suspended prison sentences and heavy fines.

According to its members, the group’s aim was to raise public awareness of accelerating, human-driven climate change and to push for concrete policy measures.

Among its key demands were increased investment in rail transport and the introduction of a low-cost nationwide train ticket.

In the statement, the Last Generation argued that their efforts have paid off, pointing to the scale and visibility of their campaigns.

They said the movement demonstrated that peaceful, mass civil disobedience can pressure governments into systemic action.

While the Last Generation as an organisation may be stepping back, its members insisted the struggle will go on in other forms.

“Once 1.5°C is exceeded, there is no turning back—the collapse of the climate has become a fact, and increasingly unstable natural forces pose a threat to us all. The political elites responsible for this collapse are only accelerating the process: they violate human rights and start wars from which they profit, thereby exposing our dependence on fossil fuels,” the statement concludes.
