Poland's President Karol Nawrocki has congratulated the United States on its 250th anniversary of independence, calling it a milestone for "a nation that has left an indelible mark on the history of the struggle for freedom and democracy."

In a social media post, Nawrocki said Poland and the US have shared a belief in liberty since the 18th century, pointing to Polish generals Kazimierz Pułaski and Tadeusz Kościuszko, who fought in the American Revolution, as well as America's constitutional tradition and the millions of Poles who helped build it.

He also recalled US support for Poland's independence in 1918 and its help in the fight against Bolshevik Russia.

Nawrocki described the two countries' alliance today as "one of the pillars of security for Europe and the entire North Atlantic Alliance," saying he was confident close cooperation between the Polish and American presidents would keep strengthening it.

He also thanked US President Donald Trump for his goodwill towards Poland and for working together to reinforce their strategic partnership, adding: "Together we are making it even stronger."

The United States marks 250 years since 13 colonies declared independence from Britain in 1776.

Celebrations have been running for months, with the main events falling on Saturday, the Fourth of July, organised by the Freedom 250 initiative that Trump announced last year.
