US troop levels in Poland to return to 10,000 within weeks: official

Poland expects the number of US troops stationed in the country to return to about 10,000 within the next eight weeks, a deputy defence minister said on Thursday, adding that Warsaw was in talks with Washington about establishing a permanent American military presence.

Deputy Defence Minister Cezary Tomczyk said US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara that American troops would return to reinforce bases in Poland.

"We will reach the level of around 10,000 soldiers," Tomczyk told broadcaster Polsat News, adding that the deployment would involve different personnel rather than a routine troop rotation.

He said Poland and the United States were continuing discussions on the long-term stationing of US forces, a move that would also involve building housing for military families.

Tomczyk said preparing the necessary infrastructure for a permanent presence would take several years.

He said Poland has invested billions of dollars in recent years to upgrade airports, roads, fuel storage facilities and other military infrastructure to support allied forces.

He identified the areas around the cities of Poznań and Wrocław as potential locations for a permanent US base because of long-standing NATO infrastructure investment there.

The comments come as the Pentagon reviews the size and distribution of US forces in Europe.

Hegseth said last month that the review, expected to last up to six months, is tied to a broader effort to shift greater responsibility for conventional defence to European NATO allies.

The Pentagon announced in May plans to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany and later scrapped a planned rotational deployment of 4,000 troops to Poland as part of a broader reduction of the US military footprint in Europe.

Days later, however, US President Donald Trump said he intended to send an additional 5,000 troops to Poland. That announcement followed intensive lobbying by Warsaw and bipartisan pressure in Washington over the future of the US military presence in Europe.

Kosiniak-Kamysz said last month that Hegseth had responded positively to Poland's proposal to establish a permanent US military base in the country.

Polish President Karol Nawrocki said on Wednesday that discussions on a permanent American presence were progressing and that the political conditions for such an agreement were in place.

Poland, a NATO member bordering Ukraine, views the US military presence as a cornerstone of its security amid Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine.
