In a post on X, the Interior Ministry said Saturday that the total of attempted crossings between January and June stood at 235 and was over 65 times lower than during the same period last year, when authorities recorded more than 15,500 attempts.
The ministry described the first six months of the year as a period of “zero successful illegal border crossings”, claiming that border protection efforts had achieved 100 percent effectiveness.
The post also pointed to a continued fall in the number of people who managed to cross the border illegally without being detained. The ministry said that figure stood at around 12,000 in 2023, 5,000 in 2024, and 1,700 last year.
The officials attributed the decline to investments in border security, saying that 700 million EUR spent on protecting the Polish-Belarusian border had delivered the expected results.
The border has been reinforced since the migration crisis began in 2021, including with a 186-kilometre steel barrier standing 5.5 metres high supplemented by an electronic surveillance system covering 206 kilometres, including sections along rivers.
