The District Prosecutor’s Office in the southwestern city of Świdnica said the alleged incident occurred on May 15, 2025, following Nawrocki's campaign meeting in the town of Ząbkowice Śląskie.
Investigators are examining whether an unidentified substance was given to Nawrocki in an unknown manner, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
Prosecutors said Nawrocki subsequently suffered violent vomiting, convulsions and a brief loss of consciousness, according to an account. He was then running for president. He won the election weeks later and took office in August last year.
The investigation concerns suspected exposure to an "immediate danger of death or serious bodily injury," District Prosecutor Marek Rusin said.
Prosecutors began a preliminary review after Polish media reported the incident in late June. Two private individuals also filed separate criminal complaints related to the case.
Rusin said the initial checks had not ruled out a sudden and severe deterioration in Nawrocki’s health after the campaign meeting. Investigators were unable to establish all the circumstances during the preliminary review.
They have now opened a formal investigation, allowing them to conduct evidence-gathering procedures that require official records.
Nawrocki has been notified and has the legal status of a victim in the proceedings.
Details of the incident first emerged from a book-length interview between Nawrocki and Polish historian Andrzej Nowak. "From that moment, I remember nothing," Nawrocki said in the book.
He recalled waking later on the campaign bus with several visibly shaken aides standing over him. He said the bus, his suit and the surrounding area had been covered following his violent vomiting.
His aides told him that he had been kicking his legs, convulsing and vomiting uncontrollably. "When I woke up, I did not know what had happened during those few minutes," Nawrocki said.
He also said his security team had repeatedly warned during the campaign that someone might try to poison him through close contact.
Under Polish law, exposing another person to an immediate danger of death or serious injury is punishable by up to three years in prison.
