Polish equality official proposes joint tax filing for same-sex couples

Poland’s government representative for equality, Katarzyna Kotula, said on Sunday that securing the right for same-sex couples to file their taxes jointly is her top priority, expressing confidence that the change could be introduced before the end of the government’s term.

Speaking at a women’s congress in Kraków, Kotula said talks were underway with Finance and Economy Minister Andrzej Domański on the issue.

"I am optimistic," Kotula said, adding that she intended to remain in her post until the issue of joint tax filing for same-sex couples was resolved. "This is an absolute priority," she said.

Kotula said she believed that by the end of the government’s term, same-sex couples would be able to file taxes jointly and would also gain rights related to inheritance and succession.

"But what will happen next year? I don’t know," she added, referring to next year’s parliamentary elections.

According to Kotula, one argument that could strengthen the case for joint taxation is the position of Polish courts. She noted that courts in Poland have recently ruled that the country should recognize marriages legally concluded abroad.
