On September 11, tolls on the A2 motorway section between Nowy Tomyśl and Konin in west-central Poland increased for the second time this year.

Under the new rates, passenger-car drivers pay PLN 41 (EUR 9,5) for each 50-kilometre section, while motorcyclists pay PLN 21 (EUR 4,9).

Other vehicle categories also face higher tolls, with the fee for oversized vehicles rising to PLN 410 (EUR 94,8).

Andrzej Sadowski of the Adam Smith Centre said the section is one of the most expensive motorways in Europe. The cost per kilometre on various motorways in Poland is surprisingly high, he added, even compared with Switzerland and other EU countries.

Sadowski said this is particularly notable given that Poland does not have the same standard of living and wage levels as some of the countries he compared it with.

Drivers can pay slightly less by using a videotolling system, which automatically reads vehicle registration plates and charges the driver's registered account. The system currently operates on the Poznań-Konin section of the motorway.

With the discount, passenger-car drivers pay PLN 39 (EUR 9) and motorcyclists pay PLN 20 (EUR 4,6). Oversized vehicles are excluded from the promotional rates.
