Poland strengthens air defences on Ukraine border

22.09.2026 15:00
Poland has deployed Patriot missile batteries and strengthened fortifications along its border with Ukraine, Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said on Tuesday, warning of a heightened risk of what he described as Russian provocations involving Polish airspace.

Kosiniak-Kamysz, who also serves as a deputy prime minister, said Russia's escalating actions meant further airspace violations could not be ruled out "in the coming period."

Speaking at the Dorohusk-Yahodyn border crossing alongside Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński, he told reporters that additional air defence positions had been set up, with Patriot batteries now stationed in the Lublin and Masovia regions.

He added that allied forces were also stepping up their presence.

Czech helicopters are operating in Poland as part of NATO's eastern-flank posture, while Slovakia is due to supply newly acquired radar systems in the coming days.

Kosiniak-Kamysz said NATO's Eastern Sentry mission, launched on September 19, 2025, in response to repeated Russian violations of the airspace of alliance countries, needed to be strengthened.

He said the issue was being discussed by NATO chiefs of defence.

Poland would contribute by building protected areas and expanding its air defence and counter-drone capabilities, according to Kosiniak-Kamysz.

Russia has recently been targeting border crossings, including those between Ukraine and Poland, in what Kosiniak-Kamysz called an attempt to destabilise frontier controls.

The threat from Moscow, including the possibility of further drone attacks, was discussed at a recent meeting of senior NATO military commanders in Copenhagen, where Poland was represented by armed forces chief Gen. Wiesław Kukuła.
