"There was no violation of Polish airspace," he wrote in a post on X.

"Our air defence systems and aircraft were ready to act."

He said the aircraft had returned to their bases and air defences to observation mode after the alert was lifted.

The jet-powered drone was among a number of unmanned aircraft used by Russia in an attack on Ukraine, said Lt Col Jacek Goryszewski, spokesman for Poland's Operational Command of the Armed Forces.

He said the military had warned the Government Security Centre, which alerted local residents, because the threat was close to the border, in Ukraine's Volyn region.

Footage circulating on social media appears to show the unmanned vehicle flying past and then exploding on impact.

Bartłomiej Wypartowicz, an editor at the Polish defence news site Defence24, said it was probably a Russian Geran-5 drone.

Air raid sirens sounded in many towns and cities in Poland's Lublin region, and residents received a government alert on their phones.

It was lifted after more than 30 minutes.
