The charge concerns several dozen invoices submitted during several months when the doctor, identified only as Dawid K. under Polish privacy laws, was employed by the hospital.
Piotr Antoni Skiba, a spokesman for the Warsaw District Prosecutor's Office, said prosecutors had imposed police supervision, a PLN 200,000 (EUR 45,700) property bond and a travel ban, with Dawid K.'s passport retained. The bail has already been paid.
Dawid K., who was an emergency department coordinator at the hospital and a Civic Coalition councillor in Warsaw's Ursus district, allegedly earned PLN 1.6 million (EUR 365,600) from medical institutions last year while undergoing specialist training in anaesthesiology, according to the zero.pl outlet.
Zero.pl also reported allegations that Civic Coalition politicians were admitted without waiting and received comprehensive examinations shortly after registering.
Dawid K. resigned from the Civic Coalition and gave up his council seat. He also returned PLN 500,000 (EUR 114,250) to the hospital after it emerged that the payment could not be properly accounted for.
Regarding the alleged “VIP lounge,” Skiba said witness testimony gathered so far does not confirm that the room was used for purposes other than those allowed under hospital regulations.
He said no witness had confirmed seeing politicians or celebrities there, while CCTV footage did not show anyone receiving medical services there in the days before it was secured.
However, several witnesses, mainly from the emergency department registration desk, mentioned a shortened route for obtaining medical consultations.
Skiba said prosecutors had identified around a dozen people, including politicians and other recognisable people, who are expected to be questioned by prosecutors and Poland's Central Anticorruption Bureau (CBA) in the coming weeks.
