Polish MP faces ethics complaint after calling journalist a ‘courtesan’

When TVP journalist Justyna Dobrosz-Oracz asked Konfederacja MP Konrad Berkowicz about his military service, he said he had no time to answer because voting was about to begin, then referred to journalists as people he spoke to, “not courtesans.”

Dobrosz-Oracz said she had been insulted and announced that she intended to sue Berkowicz.

On Wednesday, Dobrosz-Oracz shared footage on TVP Info of an attempt to interview Berkowicz outside the Sejm. During the programme, journalist Andrzej Stankiewicz described Berkowicz as “a brute, a boor and a thief.”

Stankiewicz explained that his use of the word “thief” referred to an earlier incident in which Berkowicz allegedly stole a pan from IKEA, among other items.

Sejm Speaker Włodzimierz Czarzasty announced on X that he had referred Berkowicz’s case to the Ethics Committee, requesting the highest possible penalty. He also plans to raise the matter at the next meeting of the Sejm Presidium.

Berkowicz later apologised to “all courtesans” in a post on X.

He subsequently denied insulting the journalist, saying his words referred to her profession and journalistic work.

Commenting on Czarzasty’s response, Berkowicz said he had no intention of retracting his words. He added that he believed he had spoken “very mildly” and had expressed what millions of Poles thought of Dobrosz-Oracz.

Konfederacja co-leader Sławomir Mentzen criticised the journalist but also said Berkowicz had gone too far and should not have used those words.
