A 17-year-old was taken to hospital with cuts to her forearm. Her life is not in danger. Two other women, aged 17 and 24, were slightly hurt and did not need hospital treatment.

Police said the attacker was overpowered by a school employee, who took the knife from her. She was detained and is being questioned.

“At the moment we don’t know the motive”, Warsaw police spokesman Jacek Wiśniewski said. He said the woman refused to cooperate and has not explained why she attacked.

The victims were not students. They had gone to the school on Mińska Street to hand in documents and were attacked near the secretariat, which was open because classes were being held. Police said the women did not know the suspect.

Wiśniewski said police could not confirm any link to “some kind of chain” that officials have discussed nationwide over the past 48 hours. Investigators are examining the suspect’s online activity for any sign she had signalled her intentions.

Emergency services received the call at 12.30pm and officers arrived four minutes later.

On Thursday, a 15-year-old attacked three people at a primary school in Leszczydół-Nowiny, killing a 37-year-old staff member. A day earlier, a 19-year-old stabbed nine people, including five pupils and two teachers, at a vocational school in Ostrołęka. He was also carrying a rucksack with a homemade explosive.

Police also stopped a suspected plot in Sierpc, where a 17-year-old who threatened to “do something bad” was charged and remanded in custody for two months.

Police have stepped up monitoring of schools nationwide. By 6am Saturday, officers had checked nearly 50,000 institutions and detained 76 people. Patrols will return to schools on Monday and stay until further notice.
