Tusk pledges ‘full support’ to Ukraine after Zelensky call

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk pledged Poland and Europe’s “full support” for Ukraine on Sunday after a call with Volodymyr Zelensky, days after Trump announced a diesel deal with Putin that Kyiv has criticised.

Tusk said on X that he was “absolutely convinced that no one and nothing will be able to break Ukraine and its president in their fight against Russian aggression”.

Zelensky thanked Tusk for Poland’s backing and said they had discussed how to strengthen Ukraine’s defences. He said he had briefed the Polish leader on Kyiv’s needs.

“There are now far more shellings and far more Russian destabilising actions”, Zelensky said. He added that Kyiv and Warsaw were coordinating diplomatic efforts ahead of EU meetings in Brussels.

The call came after US President Donald Trump said on Friday he had agreed with Putin that Russia would sell 4.8 million tonnes of diesel to the United States and other countries over the coming months. Zelensky called the easing of sanctions a gift to Putin that would not bring peace, and said Russia would answer concessions with greater terror. Trump’s decision drew criticism from Democrats and some Republicans.

On Saturday, Trump accused Zelensky of being able to end the war many times but choosing not to. He said Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries were causing problems worldwide and that it was time for Ukraine to “choose a new president”.

Tusk and Zelensky are due to speak on Monday at the opening of the Warsaw Security Forum, a two-day conference focused on the security of central and eastern Europe. NATO Deputy Secretary-General Radmila Shekerinska and Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, the alliance’s supreme commander in Europe, are also expected to attend.
