The Law and Justice (PiS) leader accused Tusk of lying after the prime minister said Kaczyński had announced that Poland should begin negotiations on the terms of leaving the EU.
“Jarosław Kaczyński has just announced that Poland should begin negotiations on the terms of leaving the European Union. This is one of the issues at stake in the political struggle taking place in Poland today,” Tusk wrote on X.
Kaczyński said PiS wanted the EU to benefit ordinary citizens rather than elites. He said reform should help lower energy prices, strengthen security, ensure a responsible migration policy and support ambitious economic and agricultural policies, while reducing unnecessary bureaucracy.
He pledged that PiS would “return the European Union to citizens.”
“The European Union is necessary, but it requires fundamental reform. The crisis and collapse in its current form are the result of Merkel’s rule and one of her aides, Tusk. It is hardly surprising that Tusk defends a system from which he himself benefited as president of the European Council,” Kaczyński wrote on X.
Kaczyński added that those who want "a Europe without the EU" should continue to sustain what he described as a "growing crisis harming citizens across European countries."
At Krynica Forum 2026 on Wednesday, Kaczyński proposed several ways to reform the EU, including influencing public opinion and drafting a new treaty with a delayed entry into force.
He said countries seeking changes could begin negotiations on leaving the bloc if other methods failed, describing this as a “hard and risky” approach.
PiS deputy leader Przemysław Czarnek said on Thursday that the party was not planning to take Poland out of the EU and that the priority was to reform the bloc.
