A2 motorway expansion to start in central Poland next week

30.10.2026 09:40
The 92-kilometre section of the A2 motorway between Warsaw and the central city of Łódź is set to be widened in a project starting next week, with an additional lane planned along most of the route and the first expanded sections expected to open by the end of 2027.

The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) plans to hand over the construction site to contractors Strabag and Budimex on November 4.

Drivers can expect the first traffic disruptions from that date as temporary traffic arrangements are introduced. Construction machinery and building work are expected to appear later next month.

An additional lane will be added along 89 kilometres of the 92-kilometre section. The motorway will have three lanes in each direction between the towns of Stryków and Grodzisk Mazowiecki, west of Warsaw, and four lanes towards Warsaw from Pruszków, west of the capital.

The remaining three kilometres, at the Łódź Północ junction near Łódź will undergo resurfacing.

The first two expanded sections, between the town of Łowicz and the border of Łódź province, and between Grodzisk Mazowiecki and the Konotopa junction near the capital, are expected to open by the end of next year.

The Łódź Północ–Łowicz section is due to open in April 2028, while the section between the Łódź province border and Grodzisk Mazowiecki is expected to be completed in early 2028.

Strabag is responsible for three sections between the Łowicz and Konotopa junctions. Budimex will handle the section closest to Łódź, including the Łódź Północ junction near Stryków. Work will be carried out in alternating sections to limit disruption rather than along the entire motorway at once.

Two lanes in each direction will remain available throughout construction, although one lane will be narrower. Drivers will be able to enter and leave the motorway at junctions, and access to motorway service areas will be maintained.

Traffic and construction areas will be separated by concrete barriers.

“Across the entire section of the A2 motorway from Stryków to Konotopa, the speed limit will be 70 kilometres per hour. Average-speed cameras will also be installed, covering the entire 92-kilometre construction site, including sections where no work is being carried out at a given time,” said Sylwester Wolankiewicz, traffic management engineer at Budimex.

The A2 between Warsaw and Łódź is one of Poland’s busiest road sections. Daily traffic ranges from more than 50,000 to nearly 100,000 vehicles, according to Poland’s latest General Traffic Measurement.

Traffic is expected to increase further, partly because the motorway will facilitate access to the planned Central Transport Hub (CPK).
