“In regard to the parents, the suspect carried out the murders for financial gain, because he took about PLN 10,000 (USD 2,580, EUR 2,330) from their home," said Tomasz Orepuk, a spokesman for a district prosecutor's office in Świdnica, south-western Poland.
The killings took place in the south-western town of Ząbkowice Śląskie overnight between Sunday and Monday.
Orepuk said the victims were killed with an axe.
The 18-year-old suspect, named only as “Marcel C”, has shown investigators where he hid the instrument and also where he burned his clothes after the killings, state news agency PAP reported.
It added that preliminary findings indicated the suspect had not been under the influence of drugs at the time of the crime.
Private radio broadcaster RMF FM reported on Monday that the 18-year-old had climbed onto the roof of a house and from there called the police, initially claiming that his family had been murdered by burglars.
