Zbigniew Rau said: "Polish-American relations are currently so strong, there are so many realized… common interests, and these are strategic interests, that this alliance has a systemic dimension in international relations.”

Meanwhile, the Polish prime minister's chief of staff, Michał Dworczyk, said he hoped that regardless of which candidate wins, Polish-US relations “will develop in a similar way to recent years."

He added: "We want Polish-American relations to strengthen and be as good as in recent years. Our alliance is increasingly strong. Cooperation, both in economic and military terms, is probably better than it ever was before."

The race for the White House, pitting President Donald Trump against Democratic rival Joe Biden, will be decided after a handful of states complete vote-counting over the next hours or days.
