The practice tests are not obligatory, and are being held with strict sanitary rules in place.  Students must arrive wearing face masks, which they can take off after taking their place in the exam room.

Pupils must be kept at a distance from each other, and the rooms in which they are working must be aired.

The round of mock tests started with an exam of the Polish language at 9am on Wednesday morning.

The real matura school-leaving exams start on May 4 and run until May 27. They are a rite of passage in Poland that determines teenagers’ future to a large degree.

Schools around the country switched to remote lessons last year, though the youngest children have returned to on-site classes.

Poland on Wednesday reported 15,698 new coronavirus infections and 309 more deaths, bringing its total number of cases during the pandemic to 1,735,406 and fatalities to 44,360.

Public health officials warned in the middle of last month that the daily number of new COVID-19 infections in the country was starting to rise again in a worrying new trend.
