29 illegal immigrants have been detained, SG spokeswoman Anna Michalska told public broadcaster Polish Radio on Sunday.  Among the detainees were 24 Iraqi, three Syrian and two Lebanese nationals, she added.

“Other attempts were thwarted. Three foreigners - from Syria, Ukraine and Germany were arrested for aiding and abetting,” Michalska said.

Amid a mounting migrant crisis, the SG on Saturday said it had averted a record 601 attempts to illegally cross from Belarus.

The detainees included 23 Iraqi, 3 Iranian, 2 Angolan nationals and a Congo citizen, as well as five foreigners aiding in the illegal activity.

Poland’s border service has reported over 10,000 attempts to illegally cross from Belarus and 1,500 resulting detentions since August when the migration pressure started.

Both Poland and the Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia have accused the authorities in Minsk of supporting the unlawful entry of these people into their countries.

Early September Poland declared a state of emergency in parts of two regions along its border with Belarus in a bid to stem the flow of migrants from countries such as Iraq and Afghanistan. Poland's President on Friday signed an act extending it for another 60 days.
