Poland reports 15,392 new coronavirus cases, 596 more deaths

Poland on Friday reported 15,392 new coronavirus infections and 596 more deaths related to COVID-19, bringing the country's total number of cases during the pandemic to 4,032,796 and fatalities to 94,041.

Of the new cases confirmed on Fridaythe most—2,119—were in the central Mazowieckie province, which includes the national capital Warsaw.

Meanwhile, 2,053 new infections were reported in the densely populated southern coal-mining region of Silesia.

The latest deaths in Poland's coronavirus outbreak are 432 people with pre-existing medical conditions and 164 others who died directly because of COVID-19, the health ministry said.

OThursday, Poland confirmed 616 deaths and 17,156 new coronavirus infections nationwide, compared with 775 deaths and 18,021 fresh cases a day earlier.

On April 8the country reported its highest daily toll of 954 deaths related to the coronavirus.

On April 1, the Polish health ministry confirmed 35,251 new single-day cases, the most since the pandemic hit the country early last year.

Poland's first case of coronavirus infection was reported on March 4, 2020.

21,703 in hospitals, 398,991 quarantined

The Polish health ministry announced on Friday morning that 21,703 COVID-19 patients were in hospitals nationwide, 2,061 of them on ventilators, with a further 398,991 people quarantined for possible coronavirus exposure.

Meanwhile, 3,522,816 people have now recovered from COVID-19 throughout the country, the health ministry also said.

Public health authorities last Thursday confirmed Poland's first case of the omicron COVID-19 variant. Since then 14 more omicron cases have been reported.

In the middle of last week, a range of new coronavirus restrictions took effect in the country as it seeks to fend off the new, highly contagious strain of the coronavirus.
