However, the nature of the object remains unclear and requires further examination by specialists, according to a statement from the Olsztyn police.

Jacek Wilczewski, the press officer for the Olsztyn police, told the PAP newswire that the exact nature of the object is still unknown. "No one witnessed the object falling, so it's not entirely certain that something fell or that it was a balloon. The exact nature of the object will likely be clarified soon," Wilczewski explained.

The object, found on Wednesday evening, was immediately inspected by firefighters to ensure it posed no radiological or other dangers.

Defense minister: object near Olsztyn likely a civilian weather balloon

Deputy PM and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz commented on the incident, stating that the object is most likely a civilian weather balloon. "Such situations do occur, but of course, the services must always act and investigate," Kosiniak-Kamysz said during an interview with private broadcaster Radio ZET on Thursday morning.

When asked if the balloon could be Russian, Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized the need for a thorough investigation. He noted that weather balloons are common and can be carried by strong winds, with dozens or even hundreds moving through the air daily across Poland and neighboring countries.
