"My mother passed away today. My teacher of life, love, kindness and responsibility. Her heart. Her mind. Her hands. The best mother in the world," Mateusz Morawiecki wrote on social media.
He added that he owes "everything good" in himself to her.
'Love is stronger than death'
"I owe my faith, perseverance and pride in our homeland to her," he said. "It is thanks to my mother that I know love is stronger than death."
President, PM offer condolences
President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Donald Tusk both offered condolences following the announcement.
Duda called Jadwiga Morawiecka "one of those quiet but great wives and mothers—women, heroines of our freedom."
Duda said that Jadwiga Morawiecka, wife of the late politician and former dissident Kornel Morawiecki, "was one of those quiet but great wives and mothers, women – heroines of our freedom."
Tusk extended "heartfelt condolences" on behalf of himself and the government.
"A loving mother is the greatest treasure for a loving son," he wrote.
Years of resistance under communist rule
From 1979 to 1989, Jadwiga Morawiecka was active in Poland's anti-communist opposition. She hosted underground meetings in her apartment for activists linked to the Workers’ Defence Committee (KOR) and the Human and Civic Rights Defence Movement.
She helped distribute clandestine publications and took part in patriotic events.
Between 1982 and 1989, she was under surveillance by the communist-era security service (SB). She was repeatedly interrogated, and her apartment was searched, with opposition materials seized.
From 1985 to 1987, she was barred from travelling abroad.
In 2019, Duda awarded her the Cross of Freedom and Solidarity for her role in the fight for democracy.
Jadwiga Morawiecka was the widow of Kornel Morawiecki, a physicist, politician and prominent dissident who died in 2019 at age 78.
That same year, Duda posthumously awarded him the Order of the White Eagle, Poland’s highest state honour, for his contributions to democratic change and public service.
