Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa (JSW) said the tremor occurred at 9:26 p.m. on Monday in heading 32a at a depth of 850 meters during tunneling. The Knurów operation is part of the Knurów-Szczygłowice mine.
Nine miners were in the affected area. Eight withdrew on their own; contact has not been established with one miner, JSW said.
“The mine’s management immediately decided to launch a rescue operation. Seven rescue teams are currently involved,” JSW press officer Tomasz Siemieniec said in a statement.
JSW added that broader information on the operation would be provided during a press briefing later on Tuesday morning.
