Speaking to Polish private broadcaster Polsat News on Tuesday, Nawrocki said he viewed Putin as a "war criminal who will not stop in his march against civilization, democratic states and the West."

He added that he harbored "not the slightest degree of trust" toward the Russian president.

Nawrocki said he had spoken twice with Trump and felt there was a “bond of understanding” between him and the US leader.

Trump and Putin are scheduled to meet in Alaska on Friday.

Over the weekend, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and other EU leaders issued a joint statement saying that peace in Ukraine must be achieved with Kyiv’s participation and that borders cannot be changed by force.

Tusk told a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday that leading European nations, coordinated by Finnish President Alexander Stubb, would spend the coming days preparing another joint position on Ukraine.
