Tusk told a government news conference that stirring hostility between Poles and Ukrainians is often driven by foreign services. He said the detainee had been recruited by such services and accused of placing offensive and humiliating inscriptions and paintings on monuments.
“This is not the first such case,” he added.
Jacek Dobrzyński, spokesman for the minister coordinating special services, said on X that the suspect is a Ukrainian citizen. Investigators allege he placed Banderite flags and slogans promoting Nazi ideology on buildings and monuments in Wrocław, Warsaw and Domostaw.
Dobrzyński said that in Domostaw last week the 17-year-old defaced a Volhynia Massacre monument with a Bandera flag and the phrase “Glory to UPA” in Ukrainian. He added that procedural steps are under way and the case is supervised by the National Prosecutor’s Office.
Special services coordinator Tomasz Siemoniak also reported the case on X, saying the actions were intended to inflame tensions between Poles and Ukrainians.
