The men, aged 35 and 39, later turned themselves in and will be questioned after sobering up. Both had blood alcohol levels above 2‰, and blood samples were taken to test for drugs, police added.
Adam Niedzielski, who served from 2020 to 2023 in the previous right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) government, was taken to hospital with bruises but no internal injuries.
He wrote on LinkedIn that the attackers shouted “death to traitors of the homeland” before punching and kicking him. He blamed the assault on “tolerating hate speech” and on the government’s decision to withdraw his security detail.
“I was punched in the face and then kicked while lying on the ground. The whole incident lasted only a dozen seconds, and then the attackers fled,” he said.
Niedzielski thanked the hospital staff and police for their assistance.
“This incident is the result of tolerating hate speech, but also of Minister Kierwiński’s decision to withdraw my protection despite numerous threats against me in public space. I hope this situation will make all sides of the political scene reflect that we are already on a slippery slope. Passivity will only condemn us to further escalation,” he added.
Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński rejected the accusation, saying Niedzielski had not requested protection or reported threats to police after leaving office.
